Latone

So there she is. Latona with water. Those of you who follow VDP on a regular basis will remember the May posts about the end of the long, long restoration of the gorgeous fountain in the palace gardens. They were here, and also here and finally there. As for the lady before restoration, have a peek here, with links to the mythological and allegorical meaning as well as a video. Below, the view she currently enjoys onto Anish Kapoor's 'Dirty Corner'.

La voici en eau. Ceux d'entre vous qui suivent régulièrement VDP se souviendront des billets du mois de mai, de la fin de la restauration de la très belle fontaine des jardins du château. La controverse

The title of this post says it all: controversy is the word in town about 'Dirty Corner', one of Anish Kapoor's summer exhibits in the palace gardens, on the lawn connecting the palace to the Grand Canal. Also dubbed 'the queen's vagina', it has recently been vandalised. Vigils have been held outside the palace to demand its removal. VDP will remain neutral here, since the purpose of this blog is not to discuss what is or isn't art, but merely to show the city!

Le titre de ce billet résume la situation au sujet de "Dirty Corner", l'une des œuvres d'Anish Kapoor exposées dans les jardins du château en cet été 2015. Récemment appelée "le vagin de la reine", l'installation a été vandalisée et des veillées ont eu lieu pour demander son retrait. VDP restera neutre ici, puisque l'objet de ce blog n'est pas de débattre de ce qui est ou n'est pas de l'art mais juste de montrer la ville au quotidien.

This, ladies and gentlemen, are the palace and its Grand Canal seen from the far end of the palace grounds near the small 'royal gate'. The Grand Canal is just under a mile long, so this should give you an idea of distance here, bearing in mind that VDP did use the zoom just a little bit... VDP liked all the tree shadows, hence the bonus photos.

What a difference! Latona is back, looking towards the Grand Canal again! These early May photos were taken by VDP's friend Atelier Choco Turquoise The public was invited to come and see on the palace's closing day (Mondays) but VDP was at work. So, what do you prefer? Before or after? Anyone interested in the historic restoration of Latona fountain should browse the palace's website dedicated to it. It's packed with information about techniques, history, mythology and a timeline of the restoration project! It's this way! VDP hasn't had a chance to go see it with water flowing yet, but should you so want to, check out VDP's mate's photos on his website, Pierrick Daul Photographie. They are gorgeous! Quelle différence ! Latone est de retour ! Ces photos de début mai ont été prises par l'amie de VDP, l'Atelier Choco Turquoise. Le public était invité à observer, un lundi matin, jour de fermeture du château, mais VDP travaillait. Vous préférez avant ou après ? Le site du château dédié à la restauration du bassin est extrêmement bien fait pour toute personne intéressée par les techniques, l'histoire, la mythologie et l'évolution du chantier. Il est par ici. Les régates de Versailles

Last Sunday, Versailles' Nautical Club was organising 'les régates de Versailles', a big, big rowing competition with over 1000 rowers and 35 clubs that lasted all afternoon! The event was held on the 1.2 miles long Grand Canal at the palace, in gorgeously perfect weather!

Dimanche dernier, le Cercle Nautique de Versailles organisait les "régates de Versailles", une compétition d'aviron, avec plus de 1000 rameurs et 35 clubs. L'événement a duré tout l'après-midi sur le Grand Canal au château, d'une longueur d'1,8 km, par un temps splendide !

Some were disappointed but for the crowd cheering on and the tourists, the ice-cream oldsmobile did well!

Le dépit pour certains, pendant ce temps les spectateurs et les touristes ont profité des glaces qui sont parties comme des petits pains !

Sorry, I'm probably boring you with these but I just loved the light and shadows. Note the canal seen through the window of the second shot! That's the view from the hall of mirrors!

Désolée, vous mourez sans doute d'ennui avec ces photos mais j'ai beaucoup aimé le jeu d'ombres et de lumières. Notez le grand canal visible par la fenêtre de la deuxième photo ! C'est la vue depuis la galerie des glaces !

A myriad soap bubbles to mark the moment the magical "musical fountains night show" begins at the palace! One wanders through the gardens and groves to the sound of baroque music. Weekend Reflections: le grand canal doré

The Water nights invariably end in glorious fireworks above the Grand Canal! As a bonus, here's a (very) short video to give you a better idea of what it is like to watch the explosion of colours in perfectly arranged tune with baroque music.
