November City Daily Photo Theme Day: Landmark

So... the landmark Theme is a bit easy in Versailles. You've seen the palace that millions visit every year -it is one of the if not the most visited place in the whole world-  time and time again on this blog over the past five and three quarter years... but only rarely from above! This very nice from above shot comes courtesy of VDP's friend Atelier Choco Turquoise! What you see here is a bit of Saint-Louis neighbourhood, the congress hall (the large round building, VDP had shown you the outside here) and of course, the huge palace with the royal chapel looming above it! Premier du mois, jour de thème dans la communauté des blogueurs City Daily Photo. Fastoche pour VDP ce mois-ci, puisque le thème est "repère ou monument". Vous avez vu le château un nombre incalculable de fois sur ce blog depuis cinq ans trois-quarts... mais rarement en prenant de la hauteur ! La dernière fois, c'était ici. Cette belle photo a été prise par l'Atelier Choco Turquoise ! Ce que vous voyez, c'est un p'tit bout du quartier Saint-Louis avec la Cour des Senteurs (les arbres au milieu) devant le couvent des Récollets, le palais des congrès (le grand immeuble rond dont VDP vous montrait l'extérieur ici) et bien sûr, l'immense château surplombé par la chapelle royale ! November CDP Theme Day: Heights

Are we really in November already? This month's theme in the City Daily Photo blogging community isn't an easy one for VDP but on Saturday, I happened to go to the palace and saw Saint-Louis neighbourhood 'from above'. Well, sort of. And then I remembered an archive shot of the royal chapel. Four of the twenty-eight apostles and evangelists that adorn the roof have no fear of heights whatsoever as they tower above the palace! Sommes-nous vraiment déjà en novembre ? Le thème de la communauté des blogueurs City Daily Photo pour ce nouveau mois est: "hauteurs, sommets"... Pas évident à Versailles mais samedi votre servitrice dévouée s'est rendue au château et a vu le quartier Saint-Louis "d'en haut", si je puis dire. Et puis, elle s'est souvenue de cette photo d'archive de la chapelle royale : quatre des vingt-huit apôtres et évangélistes qui ornent sa toiture n'ont pas le vertige ! 21/12/2010 : une "standing ovation"

Bravo VP who didn't even need to see the score to guess right from the start that it was Johann Sebastian Bach's marvellous Christmas Oratorio, performed by Concerto Köln and the Collegium Vocale Gent conducted by Marcus Creed. Soloists were Christina Lanshamer (soprano), Ulrike Schneider (alto), Julien Prégardien (tenor) and Andreas Wolf (bass-baritone). Thank you to these artists amongst the very best in the world for a moment suspended in time, three hours of pure bliss and joy.

Bravo à VP qui a deviné même avant d'avoir vu la partition qu'il s'agissait de L'Oratorio" de Noël de Jean-Sébastien Bach. Interprété par le Concerto Köln, le Collegium Vocale de Gand, dirigés par Marcus Creed. Les solistes : Christina Lanshamer (soprano), Ulrike Schneider (alto), Julien Prégardien (ténor) et Andreas Wolf (baryton-basse). Une interprétation magistrale par des artistes parmi les meilleurs au monde, une soirée parfaite, trois heures de bonheur et de joie!

Le 21/12/10, j'ai passé la soirée à la chapelle royale du château. Pourquoi ? Ben il y a un indice très fort sur la première photo...

Bach at the royal chapel

So... The reason why I took an afternoon off work was to listen to some Johann Sebastian Bach. Every Thursday afternoon from October through June, the Versailles Baroque Music Centre organises short concerts in the royal chapel for the very reasonable price of 6 euros. This time, along with a couple of organ pieces, it was one of Bach's Motets: "Jesu meine Freude" sung by the Versailles choir "les pages et les chantres", which can be translated by "the pageboys and eulogists" of Versailles. It's currently a 20 children and 17 young adults strong choir directed by Olivier Schneebeli, who has worked with some great names like William Christie and Philippe Herreweghe.
You can listen to some Marc-Antoine Charpentier by the choir by clicking here. It's music that would have been listened to at the Palace in the days when kings reigned over France.
If you are ever in Versailles and visiting the palace on a Thursday, I strongly recommend staying on and sitting down to enjoy the chapel in a quieter way, to relax after the exertion of the day's visit.

Voici donc la raison pour laquelle j'avais pris une demi-journée de congés pour me rendre à la chapelle du château. Le Centre de Musique Baroque de Versailles y organise tous les jeudis après-midi un concert, d'octobre à juin. Cette fois-ci, il s'agissait de quelques morceaux d'orgue et du Motet "Jesu meine Freude" de Jean-Sébastien Bach. Le choeur, les Pages et Chantres du Centre, 20 enfants et 17 jeunes adultes est dirigé par Olivier Schneebeli, qui a travaillé avec des grands noms tels que William Christie et Philippe Herreweghe. Vous pouvez écouter un morceau de Marc-Antoine Charpentier par les Pages et les Chantres par ici, c'est une musique qui a été écoutée en ces lieux au temps des rois de France. Si vous êtes à Versailles un jeudi, n'hésitez pas. Pour 6€, vous pouvez admirer la chapelle en écoutant un peu de douceur dans ce monde de brutes, et si besoin, vous reposer agréablement après avoir piétiné dans le château !

J'ai finalement décidé de vous faire attendre un peu pour vous raconter ce que je faisais dans la chapelle du château mon jeudi après-midi de congés... En attendant, et pour vous mettre dans l'ambiance, voici un détail de l'incroyable autel tout de marbre et doré paré.

The royal chapel in the palace

Yesterday afternoon, I treated myself to an afternoon off work and went to the palace chapel, where kings and queens attended mass. You've already partly seen the outside here. It was erected by Jules Hardouin-Mansart (yes, him again!) who started work onit in 1689, only to be interrupted by war. Building resumed in 1699 and it was eventually finished in 1710 by Hardouin-Mansart's brother in law, Robert de Cotte, as Mansart died in 1708. Several artists contributed to the inside decoration, one of the rare French examples of a painted chapel vault opposing the Old and New Testaments. More of why I went to the Chapel tomorrow!

Hier après-midi, je me suis fait un menu plaisir : j'ai posé une demi-journée de congés pour me rendre à la chapelle royale du château, dont vous avez déjà en partie vu l'extérieur ici. Elle a été érigée par Jules Hardouin-Mansart (toujours lui !) qui débuta les travaux en 1689. Ils furent interrompus par la guerre et reprirent en 1699 pour s'achever en 1710, après la mort de Mansart auquel succéda son beau-frère Robert de Cotte. Plusieurs artistes eurent la charge de la décoration intérieure, un des rares exemples d'une voûte peinte en France qui oppose les Ancien et Nouveau Testaments. Demain, la suite du pourquoi je me rendais à la chapelle !

The downside

The downside of course of having about 7 million visitors a year is that on a good day, you can't see the palace anymore, it is hidden behind rows and rows of coaches. These here are a few winter coaches, in the summer it's another story altogether, the place is overflowing with buses, most of which never turn off their engines. The palace chapel is in the background.

Un des inconvénients lorsqu'on reçoit environ 7 millions de visiteurs par an, c'est que parfois, le château disparaît littéralement derrière les cars. Ici, c'est l'hiver et il y en a peu... En été, c'est une toute autre histoire, la place d'armes est noyée sous les bus, dont la plupart laissent tourner le moteur. La chapelle du château se trouve en arrière-plan.

Maybe I'm guessing wrong, but some of you might have been wondering if the palace is still there as I only rarely seem to go near it. Well... yes, of course it is still there and here's a little appetizer, because we will most certainly stop near or inside it from time to time... This here is one of the outer courtyard palace statues, standing in front of the royal chapel.
