Les smartphones au cinéma sous les soucoupes volantes

This is inside the largest hall of Cyrano cinema and it was almost full for "the Revenant" two days after its release in France... Note the smartphones, some people (including the geezer sitting next to VDP) actually used their mobile phones during the film...

La plus grande salle du Cyrano était plutôt pleine vendredi soir pour "the Revenant" deux jours après sa sortie. Notez les smartphones, le voisin de VDP a même consulté le sien pendant le film...

Au cinoche

Before we go inside the chapel of Lycée Hoche, a small detour if that's okay with you... Last Friday evening, VDP went to see "the Revenant" at Cyrano cinema which VDP had shown you from the outside way back in February 2009, it was here. The cinema is going to undergo a huge makeover so it was high time to show you the inside!

Avant d'entrer dans la chapelle du Lycée Hoche, un petit détour... Vendredi dernier VDP est allée voir "the Revenant" au Cyrano, cinéma qu'elle vous montrait au tout début de la vie du blog, c'était ici en février 2009. Comme le cinoche va faire l'objet d'importants travaux, il était grand temps d'en montrer l'intérieur !

"Kirsten-Antoinette"

The main movie of the open air cinema evening was Sofia Coppola's "Marie-Antoinette" which (blush) VDP had never seen. It had been years since VDP has watched a dubbed film, that was strange! VDP adored it, which is surprising considering that she usually dislikes movies that have little historical substance. Part of VDP agrees with Jean-Luc Douin who in Le Monde described 'Marie-Antoinette' as a ‘kitsch and roc(k)oco’ film which ‘deliberately displays its anachronisms’, and additionally as a ‘sensory film’ that was ‘dreamt by a Miss California’ and ‘orchestrated around the Du Barry or Madame de Polignac playground gossip’. Part of VDP scrambled to search for the history of macarons, which did NOT exist in the ‘Ladurée’ form seen here until the XIXth century, though of course the delightful little things certainly owe this movie a great deal, having since rocketed to stardom and must-have status all over the world. Part of VDP is happy that the great masses should now know (with certainty because Kirsten Dunst herself said it!) that the queen most probably never actually uttered the words ‘let them eat cake’ (so please, at least when commenting on this blog, stop saying that she did, you will earn VDP's eternal gratitude!). While VDP believes that the film gives a tiny insight into the hornet’s nest that was the French royal court, the ‘sweet tooth depravity’ shown here is miles from who Marie-Antoinette probably was in reality, a woman who was likely far less stupid and frivolous than usually portrayed. Marie-Antoinette is a very touchy subject in this country, where she is still widely hated (despite the fact that it is mainly the support of the American war of Independence that ruined France, not her follies that merely constituted contributing factors. What's more, such follies weren't unusual -probably even standard- in a world of monarchies which we judge with post-revolutionary, XXIst century eyes)…

And yet VDP loved it! The explosion of colours, the lavish costumes (full of anachronisms too but hell…), the ‘Converse All Stars’ feet scene, the soundtrack (ahhhh Adam and the Ants during the love scene with count de Fersen – oops pity she probably never did actually have sex with Fersen back then)… She loved seeing Versailles and the no less beautiful château of Vaux Le Vicomte –the castle without which there might not have been Versailles- where some scenes were shot. VDP thoroughly enjoyed herself but wishes that people who visit Versailles and dream of Kirsten Dunst wouldn’t believe that this is an accurate portrayal of Maria Antonia Josepha Johanna, archduchess of Austria and queen of France (and trust VDP, a lot do, the conversations you sometimes overhear when at the palace are too funny). Okay, before you ask, no VDP isn’t a monarchist and sorry for the long post…

Le film projeté à la séance inaugurale des Yvelines font leur cinéma cette année, c'était Marie-Antoinette de Sofia Coppola que VDP n'avait encore jamais vu. VDP a beaucoup aimé le côté décalé du film (la scène des Converse All Star l'a éclatée) ce qui est étonnant puisqu'elle aime bien, en général, les films qui collent plus à la réalité historique et trouve dommage que tant de touristes qui se pressent à Versailles pensent désormais que Maria Antonia Josepha Johanna, archiduchesse d'Autriche et reine de France était Kirsten Dunst... Ah là là, les conversations que l'on surprend parfois en traînant au château !

Before the movie at the open-air cinema evening, we got to see a delightful short film directed by Béatrice Masson and Rose Tée and entirely set in Versailles. Ciné de plein air

Last Thursday evening, this year's edition of open air movies in various cities of the whole Yvelines department was launched in the garden of Trianon Palace hotel in Versailles (the 'county town' of the Yvelines). It had poured with rain all morning but the weather forecast wasn't too bad for the evening and there was a huge turnout! Thankfully, VDP's friend had been able to arrive earlier than her to reserve seats in the front row! It actually rained a bit during the movie but not enough to make anyone leave!

Jeudi dernier était lancée l'édition 2015 des "Yvelines font leur cinéma" dans le jardin du Trianon Palace. Le matin, c'était la mousson mais les prévisions météo n'étaient pas trop mauvaises pour la soirée et du coup il n'y avait pas assez de transats pour accommoder la foule s'étant déplacée ! Heureusement, une amie de VDP avait pu arriver suffisamment tôt pour réserver des places au premier rang ! Pendant la séance, il y eut un peu de crachin, mais pas assez pour faire fuir les spectateurs!

Weekend Reflections: Saint-Louis et le Hobbit

Saint-Louis cathedral (the dome on the right in the first picture) and a nice winter sky are reflected in the Hobbit billboard! 'The Battle of the Five Armies' was released on Wednesday! More Weekend Reflections are this way! Incidentally, these photos were taken during a walk with James!

Tournage !

Starting a guest photo series today! VDP works far from Versailles and on weekdays doesn't get to witness what's happening in town or at the palace... Thankfully, Atelier Choco Turquoise sometimes does and had the opportunity to watch as on a bleak October Monday, which is the palace closing day, a new 'Versailles' TV series was being shot by Canal+ and Agence Capa! Happy Hallowe'en!

Démarrage d'une série de photos d'invités aujourd'hui ! VDP travaille loin de Versailles et rate bien souvent des événements en semaine. Mais grâce à l'Atelier Choco Turquoise, VDP peut vous montrer des photos du tournage de la future série "Versailles" de Canal+ et l'agence Capa, tournée pour partie au château, ici un lundi d'octobre (le lundi étant le jour hebdomadaire de fermeture du château) !

"Un monstre à Paris"

Just before VDP left on her short break, there was some open-air cinema in Jussieu neighbourhood on a very, very hot and humid evening. The film was lovely, 'un monstre à Paris' (I'm sure you'll be able to translate that by yourselves!), a 3D animated musical adventure film by Bibo Bergeron, set in Paris in 1910. It was fun to watch local commercials before the beginning (and those girls were still having fun on the trampoline of parc de la bonne aventure (good fortune park) at that stage! Some people picnicked before the screening!

Juste avant les vacances de VDP, il y avait une soirée ciné de plein air à Jussieu, un soir où il faisait très, très chaud et lourd. "Un monstre à Paris" est un dessin animé de Bibo Bergeron en images de synthèse utilisant également la technique du cinéma en relief, dont l'intrigue se déroule à Paris en 1910. Ce fut une agréable découverte ! Au stade des pubs locales, ci-dessus, les gamines s'éclataient encore sur le trampoline du parc de la bonne aventure. Certains pique-niquèrent avant la projection !

"Nebraska" au Roxane

Very often, VDP has a craving to hit the road in the USA. To try to calm it, VDP went to see the movie 'Nebraska' (a black and white film) and hey presto, was on Interstate 90W heading out of Billings, Montana! I had shown you Roxane cinema from the outside, it was high time to show you the inside! Loved the movie by the way and can't wait to be back on I90!

Très souvent, l'envie de prendre le volant aux Etats-Unis démange VDP. Pour tenter de calmer ce manque, VDP est allée voir (et a beaucoup aimé) "Nebraska" et hop, s'est retrouvée sur la route 90 Ouest, à la sortie de Billings dans le Montana... Je vous avais montré le Roxane de l'extérieur, il était grand temps que je vous emmène à l'intérieur !

L'Alhambra

Isn't the above photo fantastic? It's one of the pictures shown at the current 'cinema in Versailles' photo exhibition on the outside walls of the king's veg garden. Now of course it is also very interesting to see that the 'Alhambra' was Versailles' first cinema, opened a century ago! It has since disappeared... Il manque le quatrième larron sur la photo principale ! C'est l'une des photos de l'expo du moment sur les murs du potager du roi. L'Alhambra, le premier cinéma versaillais, ouvrait ses portes avenue de Sceaux il y a un chouïa plus qu'un siècle. Il a malheureusement disparu. Les films de Versailles

 There is a new photo exhibition on the outside walls of the king's veg garden! This time, it's about films that have Versailles -whether palace or city- as setting. VDP is now trying to remember if she ever saw the 1956 Marie-Antoinette movie with Michèle Morgan, Richard Todd and Jacques Morel! There is an alley on Artsy Versailles.

Il y a une nouvelle expo photo sur les murs du potager du roi. Cette fois-ci, le thème c'est le cinéma et plus précisément, les films tournés à Versailles, que ce soit au château ou dans la ville. Du coup, VDP est incapable de se rappeler si elle a déjà vu Marie-Antoinette avec Michèle Morgan... Et vous, vous les avez tous vus ? Il y a une allée sur Artsy Versailles.

Le Roxane

In February 2009 I showed you one of Versailles city centre's cinemas. Here's the other one. Every time I walk by or go there, I can't help but hum Police's hit (even though it isn't spelled the same) while thinking of the heroine of Cyrano de Bergerac (spelled the same)! Perhaps because the other cinema is called the Cyrano?

En février 2009, je vous montrais l'un des deux cinémas du centre ville.Voici l'autre. A chaque fois que je passe devant ou que j'y vais, je ne peux pas m'empêcher de fredonner le tube de Police tout en pensant à l'héroïne de Cyrano de Bergerac. Peut-être parce que l'autre cinoche s'appelle le Cyrano ?

Je suis absente pour quelques jours mais je voulais tout de même vous souhaiter que du bonheur en 2011 donc j'ai programmé ce billet. Je viendrai regarder vos photos à mon retour. Je me demande encore comment j'ai fait pour prendre cette photo et je l'adore, donc elle devient la meilleure de 2010! A bientôt !

Going to the movies on Friday night?

Versailles has two city centre cinemas. This one here is the "Cyrano" situated rue Rameau. I like this line of billboards, theoretically at least it gives you a wide choice!
