Satory

Ten days ago, we had a very, very warm day. It doesn't look like a warm day! VDP had intended to go to the palace but turned back when she saw the crowds... Instead, she went to Satory, the military zone of Versailles, a long succession of barracks and high security buildings, including that of the GIGN, the National Gendarmerie Intervention Group. You had previously seen a Gendarmerie building on VDP here.

Il y a dix jours, il faisait chaud, bien qu'on ne dirait pas sur ces photos. VDP avait l'intention de se rendre au château mais a fait demi-tour vu le monde ! Elle est allée se promener au camp militaire de Satory, où est basé notamment le GIGN...

Forêts en août

The city is more or less surrounded by forests, one of which bears the town's name. The second photo shows a path into Fausses-Reposes forest. Both were taken in August. As you can imagine, these forests were once much larger and were perfect royal hunting grounds.

La ville est plus ou moins entourée de forêts, dont l'une porte son nom. La seconde photo présente un chemin dans la forêt de Fausses-Reposes. Comme vous pouvez l'imaginer, ces forêts qui furent bien plus vastes constituaient d'excellentes chasses royales.

Clément Ader

A sculpture showing Clément Ader (1841-1925) stands at the edge of Versailles forest in Satory neighbourhood to remind us that it was precisely in Satory that this inventor and engineer first lifted his 'plane' off the ground for 300 metres in 1897, making him... a pioneer.

Weekend Reflections: l'étang de la Martinière

Martinière artificial lake, located in Satory military neighbourhood, was created during Louis the 14th's reign as a reservoir for the palace's grounds. As it is part of the army's domain, fishing is only allowed with a special permit. This is this week's contribution to Weekend Reflections.

L'étang de la Martinière, situé dans le quartier militaire de Satory, est artificiel. Il a été créé sous Louis XIV pour alimenter les jardins du château. Aujourd'hui domaine militaire, vous voyez qu'il n'est pas possible d'aller y pêcher... sauf pour certains ! Ce sont les Reflets du Weekend.

Grange ?

A barn? Nope! Just part of what I believe is a stadium in Satory military neighbourhood.

Lazare Hoche et sa maison natale

At the beginning of the week, I showed you Hoche street and place and explained a little about the general. Here is Lazare Hoche in more detail. This below is the house where he was born, in (rue) Satory street. As you can see, the ground floor is now a restaurant named after him!

Au début de la semaine, je vous montrais les rue et place Hoche, voici donc le général en plus détaillé, ainsi que ci-dessous, sa maison natale rue de Satory. Le restaurant du rez-de-chaussée, évidemment, ne pouvait s'appeler que "chez Lazare" !
