Friday cakes

As a TGIF treat, I'm taking you to Gaulupeau, baker since 1769, "pâtisserie" since 1831 and in more modern times also become "chocolatier", "glacier" (ice-cream) and reception/wedding caterer. Don't miss them if you are ever in Versailles. Enjoy!

Le château: statue and chapel

Maybe I'm guessing wrong, but some of you might have been wondering if the palace is still there as I only rarely seem to go near it. Well... yes, of course it is still there and here's a little appetizer, because we will most certainly stop near or inside it from time to time... This here is one of the outer courtyard palace statues, standing in front of the royal chapel.
-----------------------

All ready to be used, with the palace in the background! Sorry for the poor quality photo.

Jules Hardouin-Mansart

May I introduce you to Jules Hardouin-Mansart, a household name in Versailles? This here is his bust in Notre-Dame church which he built. He was one of the greatest architects in 17th and 18th century Europe, Louis the 14th's favourite and we owe him many a fine building not only in Versailles which he shaped, but also in Paris and elsewhere in France. You can read more about him by clicking here.
--------------------

At the Newsagents

Saturday evening I felt like getting myself a couple of glossy magazines... There are newsagents booths like this one scattered all over Versailles, I'll have to remember to show you how they look from the outside, because they are quite pretty.
----------------------

Sunday again!

Last Sunday I introduced you to the very typical scouts of Versailles. So today, I can't resist posting this one, which was taken in front of the cathedral. Again the faces are voluntarily slightly blurred. Have a great Sunday!

Bon dimanche !

I loved the shape of those trees on classical Place Hoche.

Going to the movies on Friday night?

Versailles has two city centre cinemas. This one here is the "Cyrano" situated rue Rameau. I like this line of billboards, theoretically at least it gives you a wide choice!

Inside Saint Louis Cathedral

Last week, one of my readers asked me if we could go into the cathedral again, so please step inside and walk to the altar...
-----------------

On Monday, I saw this little sign that spring is on its way and thought how lovely! It's waaaay too early but still oh so nice!

The grounds of Madame Elisabeth's Orangerie

A circle of very British looking benches and a magpie that turned around just when I took the picture! But where are the people? Well, like I said, the park was closed for some reason, so this was taken through the gates.

Yesterday I went for a stroll at Madame Elisabeth's Orangerie, so called because the large estate was bought by king Louis the 16th as a gift for his sister, Elisabeth. Fully restored, the building has become a tiny exhibition centre. Currently exhibited in partnership with Montréal's Contemporary Art Museum until the 22nd are drawings of several Canadian artists like Albert Dumouchel, Betty Goodwin and Sylvia Safdie. Photos inside incidentally weren't allowed. Oh, and guess what? The park was closed.

Sunday scouts

A typical Sunday encounter in Versailles where many children are enrolled as boy scouts or in similar organisations. The faces are voluntarily slightly blurred.

Cathédrale Saint Louis

Oops! Yesterday I showed you a detail of the inside of Saint Louis Cathedral, but I forgot that you may not yet know the façade. So, before we go inside again, here it is. It is dedicated to king Louis the 9th better known since his canonization as Saint Louis of France, who died in Tunisia in 1270 on his way home from the 8th Crusade. Incidentally, quite a few towns around the world gained their name from him, including it seems Saint Louis, Missouri. You can read about the history of the cathedral, which was inaugurated first as a church quite recently in 1754, then as a cathedral in 1797 by clicking here.
------------------

A look into a private garden

I did want to show you the palace gardens in the snow but they were closed, so here's an admittedly poor substitute for the real thing, which is this next photo, as seen through the gates...

Btw, the sky is blue this morning!
-------------------

Treacherous slush

Coming home from grocery shopping on Place Charost last Saturday. The little old lady made it safely to the other end of the street.
To answer some of your questions, snow in the north of France shouldn't be something unusual though it seems to have become so... Last time we had this much snow was in 2005. Let's say we enjoy it very much so long as it doesn't entail absolute chaos -which it often does!
Today incidentally we have gale force winds and temperatures are on the rise. Strange sudden weather changes...
------------------

Saturday afternoon ride with the kids under snow laden trees

Statue like a sentinel on the avenue des Etats-Unis yesterday at lunchtime, in the middle of what can only be called a snowstorm.

Blood analysis

Most of us don't like giving blood samples for analysis. While I don't mind, it's never a particularly agreeable experience. This, however, would be a place I wouldn't mind going to, as medical analysis laboratories go, it's quite friendly! It looks almost like a verdant trendy café!
--------------------

Reflection of Sofitel Pullman Hotel entrance

Thank you so much for your warm welcome! I'm still having issues with RSS feeds and XML things to even make this blog appear on City Daily Photo now that it's been approved so please, bear with me, I'm hoping to get there by... Easter!
Now for today's picture: I couldn't resist this reflection! The hotel is located near the palace in what was once the artillery riding school under Napoleon the 3rd. The gate is all that remains of the building of 1854.
-------------

Snow

Three days into this Daily Blog and I already have to apologize. It snowed quite heavily last night and this morning in greater Paris, indeed in all of northern France and Great Britain, Spain and other European countries. Then it rained for most of the day so that when I came home from work, needless to say that what was left of the snow was very sparse and of course, it was pitch dark. So all I have to offer is this morning's picture, certainly not my best!

Theme day: paths or passages
