Weekend Reflections: Opium

Notre-Dame covered market and the Saturday market stalls, as well as a cyclist are reflected in an YSL (Yves Saint Laurent) ad. VDP used to love that perfume! All Weekend Reflections are this way!
Early afternoon update: it seems the notoriety of YSL and Opium the perfume hasn't reached everyone. So click on the links if you want to know more about it, yes it is a perfume, has been for almost 40 years and is perfectly legal!

Monday mural : numéro deux aux halles Notre-Dame

In January, VDP showed you a new mural on an underground parking entrance at Notre-Dame covered market (click here to see it). There is now another one on another parking entrance, depicting a scene from a 1662 event! More Monday Murals are this way!

En janvier, c'était ici, VDP vous montrait la décoration sur l'une des entrées du parking souterrain du marché Notre-Dame. Entre temps, il y en a une nouvelle sur une autre entrée, représentant un détail du grand carrousel du roi les 5 et 6 juin 1662 ! Les Fresques du lundi sont par ici !

Entrée royale de parking

On a walk just before Christmas, VDP noticed that the underground parking entrance at Notre-Dame market had been tampered with... in a rather nice and regal way, wouldn't you say? Zooming out to see this one from the antiques district! The arch is one of the covered market entrances. This allows VDP to take part in Monday Mural! Apologies for not visiting your blogs yesterday. It was a long day in France.

En se promenant juste avant Noël, VDP a remarqué que l'entrée du parking souterrain de la place du marché Notre-Dame avait été enjolivée, de manière assez royale, vous ne trouvez pas ? Zoom arrière comme si vous veniez du quartier de la Geôle (des antiquaires). L'arche est l'une des entrées du marché. Ceci permet à VDP de participer aux Fresques du Lundi ! Mille excuses, VDP n'a pas eu le loisir de visiter vos blogs hier, la journée fut longue en France.

Wednesday 7 January, gunmen shot dead twelve people and wounded several others, some critically so, at the Paris office of satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo in what is now with a good degree of certainty established as a militant Islamist attack. Among the dead are four of the magazine's well-known cartoonists, its editor, as well as two police officers. On Wednesday evening, while thousands took to the streets in France, there were only about forty of us freezing on Notre-Dame market place trying to keep the candles going in the wind but it was a very warm human moment...

Mercredi soir... nous n'étions qu'une quarantaine à faire tenter de brûler les bougies dans le vent glacial mais il y avait beaucoup de chaleur humaine...

And then yesterday evening at the town hall, on a national mourning day that was also the day of another shooting just outside Paris in the aftermath of which a young policewoman died, there was an official gathering with a better turnout.

Et puis, hier soir, journée de deuil national, après une deuxième fusillade à Montrouge, il y eu plus de monde pour le rassemblement républicain à la mairie.

On the steps of the town hall...

 As everywhere else in France, the Tricolor flag is flying at half mast over all official places, in this case the préfecture building that you can read about here. Official cars were parked outside it in the evening for what was in all likelihood a crisis meeting, though there was also an ecumenical meeting. The traditional official new year's wishes ceremony was cancelled yesterday.

Comme partout en France, le drapeau tricolore est en berne sur la préfecture. Il y avait des voitures officielles garées devant le beau bâtiment hier soir sans doute pour une réunion de crise après l'annulation des vœux du préfet des Yvelines, à moins que cela n'ait été pour la réunion œcuménique.

Just before Christmas, VDP had a medical appointment here. Well, up from where this photo looking down on Notre-Dame market place was taken! You can see two of the four covered market buildings, the two others are out of sight on the right. There are also some outside stalls! You can see all the covered market, market and market place shots inside and out by clicking here! Tomorrow we'll look the other way!

Juste avant Noël, VDP s'est rendue à un rendez-vous médical ici. Enfin, là d'où la photo a été prise ! Voici donc deux des carrés du marché couvert Notre-Dame, les deux autres étaient hors de portée de l'objectif, sur la droite. Toutes les photos, intérieures et extérieures, des halles, du marché et de la place sont par ici ! Demain nous jetterons un coup d’œil dans l'autre sens !

March City Daily Photo Theme Day: people on the street

People on the street: a huge challenge for VDP with the privacy issues in this country! Last Sunday morning the weather was perfect to enjoy the hustle and bustle of the big Sunday market in and around Notre-Dame covered market. Here are campaigners from three of the four parties present that morning. The French municipal elections are coming up soon, hence these scenes. Les gens dans la rue : c'est le thème du mois de mars dans la communauté des blogueurs City Daily Photo. Dur, dur pour VDP qui n'aime pas trop photographier des personnes à la volée... Dimanche matin, le temps était idéal pour aller faire un tour au marché Notre-Dame et comme les élections municipales approchent, voici la campagne électorale qui bat son plein ! A la gaîté

Gaîté translates as joyfulness, gaiety, cheerfulness, playfulness... If you were standing with VDP looking at à la gaîté café, you'd have Notre-Dame covered market behind you and the antiques district to your right! This sign tells us that there have been food and drink here for a long time!

Si vous étiez avec VDP au moment où ces photos du café à la gaîté ont été prises, vous auriez les halles Notre-Dame derrière vous et le quartier des antiquaires, dit de la geôle, à votre droite. Ce panneau nous indique que la maison a depuis longtemps été un lieu de libations !

Dinner at Le V. Absolutely scrumptious (seen here clockwise from top right: pork, steak and seabass as well as strawberry and raspberry tiramisu).

Diner au V., au marché Notre-Dame. Absolument délicieux (nos plats dans le sens des aiguilles d'une montre à partir du haut à droite : filet mignon de porc, entrecôte avec gratin dauphinois, bar et tiramisu aux fruits rouges).

I keep forgetting to post photos at the moment. These were taken near Notre-Dame covered market almost two months ago and I apologise for the delay! I don't know who it is, but he was really good!
Yesterday in Paris I had the great pleasure of meeting up with Rob of Barcelona Daily Photo for a quick drink! I didn't realize that his eyes were closed when I took this photo, sorry Rob!

J'oublie sans cesse de poster des photos en ce moment. Celles-ci ont été prises près des halles Notre-Dame il y a presque deux mois. Je ne sais pas qui c'est mais il était vraiment doué !
J'ai eu le grand plaisir de rapidement rencontrer Rob de Barcelona Daily Photo hier soir pour un verre à Paris. Je n'ai pas vu que ses yeux étaient fermés, désolée Rob !

Carré à la farine

Mid May, a small art exhibition was held inside one of the four squares of Notre-Dame covered market, the one called 'flour square', the only one where you can't buy food and which is often used for exhibitions. You have seen bits of the buildings of the covered market several times, here's one of the better views of a couple of them (the smaller buildings). Anyway, the problem here was the 'no photographing' the artwork sign that you can clearly see on the door to the right of the photo. But it gives me a chance to show you the inside of the first floor of the covered market!

Mi-mai, une petite exposition d'art s'est tenue à l'intérieur de l'un des quatre carrés des halles Notre-Dame, le carré à la farine, le seul où on ne peut acheter de la nourriture et qui est souvent utilisé pour des expos. Vous avez vu les halles plusieurs fois, notamment ici (les petits bâtiments). Le problème c'est l'affiche "interdiction de photographier" les œuvres que vous pouvez reconnaître sur la porte de gauche. Mais néanmoins, cela me donne l'occasion de vous montrer l'intérieur du premier étage des halles !

Saint Pierre

If you've had a bit too much to eat lately, you might consider cooking fish. John Dory is one of the more expensive ones but oh so good! Seen at Notre-Dame covered market.

Si vous un peu trop fait bonne chère ces jours-ci, le poisson sera une bonne option de diète. Par exemple un peu de Saint-Pierre, vu aux Halles Notre-Dame.
