Les bas-reliefs du Belvédère

VDP had another contender for yesterday's Theme Day. This is one of the bas-reliefs at the Belvedere at Petit Trianon and represents an old Saturn warming himself by the fire. The bas-reliefs of Richard Mique's little octagonal marvel represent the four seasons. Below are Flora, with a crown of roses; Ceres with a crown of ears of wheat and Dyonisus with a crown of vine stock. Finally, an unknown but modern deity, no doubt...

VDP avait en réserve une autre photo pour le thème d'hier. C'était l'un des bas-reliefs du Belvédère et représente un vieux Saturne se chauffant au feu. Les bas-reliefs de la petite splendeur octogonale de Richard Mique représentent les quatre saisons. Ci-dessous, Flore couronnée de roses, Cérès couronnée d'épis de blé et Bacchus couronné d'un cep de vigne. Enfin, une déité non identifiée mais moderne...

Cérès

Isn't this sweet? It's a detail of Ceres Fountain which was laid out between 1672 and 1679 by Thomas Regnaudin, after a drawing by Charles Le Brun. Ceres, the Roman goddess of harvests and corn, is seated on a bed of corn stalks, accompanied by cornflowers and roses. It symbolises summer (text of the palace's website).

Ce n'est pas mignon ? C'est un détail du bassin de Cérès, carré, qui a été conçu entre 1672 et 1679 par Thomas Regnaudin, d’après un dessin de Charles Le Brun. Cérès, déesse romaine des moissons, est assise sur un lit de gerbes de blés, accompagné de bleuets et de roses. (Texte du site du château).

Le dragon et la mouette

The dragon and the seagull. This is the dragon basin at the edge of the palace gardens, which we owe to the Marsy brothers. It depicts one of the episodes of the legend of Apollo: the Python snake killed by an arrow shot by the young Apollo. The reptile is surrounded by dolphins and Cupids armed with bows and arrows riding on swans.

Au bassin du dragon, œuvre des frères Marsy : le serpent Python, qui fut tué d’une flèche par le jeune Apollon. Le reptile est entouré de dauphins et d’Amours armés d’arcs et de flèches, montés sur des cygnes.Toutes les références mythologiques se trouvent par ici.

Les Grandes Eaux Nocturnes III : le Bassin de Latone

By the time it gets really dark, most fountains are extremely hard to photograph with a tiny camera and no tripod! I believe this one came out fairly well! It is Leto fountain, Zeus' mistress, mother of Apollo and Artemis. Built in 1688, it is an allegory representing Anne of Austria defending her son Louis the 14th against the insurgents during the "Fronde" civil war.

Quand il commence à vraiment faire nuit, il devient difficile de réussir les photos de fontaines avec un tout petit appareil et sans pied, mais j'ai trouvé celle-ci assez réussie ! Voici donc la fontaine de Latone (Léto), maîtresse de Zeus, mère d'Apollon et d'Artémis. Construite en 1688, c'est une allégorie, représentant Anne d'Autriche défendant son fils Louis XIV contre les frondeurs.

This is a detail of the dragon's basin in the palace grounds. The young Apollo kills the snake Python with a single arrow. I shall be away for a fortnight, I would have liked to schedule some posts but the functionality has stopped working since mid-June and still isn't fixed. See you in two weeks and enjoy July! Voici un détail du bassin du dragon dans le parc du château. Le jeune Apollon tue le serpent Python d'une flèche. Je m'en vais pour une quinzaine, j'aurais aimé pouvoir programmer quelques photos mais la fonctionnalité ne marche plus depuis mi-juin et n'est toujours pas réparée. A dans deux semaines, profitez bien du mois de juillet ! Ah, et pour ceux qui restent, vous pourriez avoir envie de participer au pique-nique républicain du 14 juillet près du grand canal ou aller écouter Christophe, à moins que vous ne préfériez les grandes eaux.
