Expo Reliure 1820-2010 I

So here we are at the bookbinding exhibition. Above are books that bear empress Josephine's emblem. Below, a later binding by Marius Michel (1846-1925) with some tools of the trade.
----------------------------------------
Nous voici donc à l'expo de reliures. Ci-dessus, des ouvrages portant le chiffre de l'impératrice Joséphine. A gauche, une reliure plus moderne exécutée par Marius Michel (1846-1925) et quelques outils.

They're so beautiful! I spent all my working life in the printing and newspaper industry, but I've never worked in bookbinding. I feel I really missed something when I see these, especially the second photo.

So elegant and such detail they put into it. I'm getting the impression that you're showing the more refined aspect of humanity and I'm showing the, well...the less refined side (tombstones). :)

J'aime bien le tissu moiré de la reliure de Marius Michel.

Such lovely leather jackets with which to clothe the pages of books.

With Kindle the smell and feel of a leather binding is lost to us.

P.S. Lest you think I am a fan of such things, I have never even seen a Kindle in real life.

Beautiful books. Bindings like that are missing with a Kindle and todays books.

My one and only reddish-brown leather book cover does not have anyone's emblem, but it does have 22 karat gold... and it's covering The Essential Writings of Albert Camus. :-) Magnifique, n'est-ce pas?

I recently saw a tv show on rebinding books and was amazed by the amount of effort and time it takes. The results were not as impressive as these however.

I read a lot so LOVE books. I wonder what will happen to libraries with so many people reading e-books these days.
