Borne de la 2ème DB

Borne de la 2ème DB Versailles
While we're on the subject of war, this distance marker outside the Town Hall is fairly new and was inaugurated in front of the war memorial in September (while VDP was away gallivating on the other side of the big pond), during the 70th anniversary of the Liberation of France commemorations this year. Like Paris, Versailles was liberated in August 1944 by the famous 2nd Armoured Division commanded by General Philippe Leclerc de Hauteclocque. Markers like this one have been erected on their blazing trail from the Normandy region in the West of France to Alsace in the East. On the side of the marker, there is also a reference to the Kufra battle oath. On 2 March 1941, after the fall of Kufra in Libya, Leclerc and his troops swore an oath to fight until 'our beautiful flag flies over the cathedral of Strasbourg', the Alsatian city on the German border. They were faithful to it on 23 November 1944.
Update 13 November: there seem to be markers like this one in the USA too. See one in Tallahassee, Florida, by clicking here.

At the city limit stand these two monuments facing each other. One is dedicated to General Pershing and is engraved with the names of famous World War I battles and Pershing's words 'La Fayette, here we come', pronounced on 15 June 1917. The second one is dedicated to General La Fayette, also engraved with famous battles such as Yorktown, James River and Brandywine where he was wounded. His words in 1776: 'the instant I learned that America was fighting for its independence, my heart enrolled', thus committing French aid in the American Revolutionary war. The monument has recently been restored and I owe it to the renovators As.ri.eu.pe to even have noticed it. These photos were taken in August.
---------------------------

September City Daily Photo Theme Day: Big

The monument to honor the Gendarmerie, a military body with police duties, was completed in 1941 but only inaugurated after the war in 1946. The lady in the middle, with her sword, symbolises France. She is just over 13 ft tall which should give you an idea of the size of the monument. The other characters represent gendarmes through the ages, from the days of king Louis the 15th to the 20th century. It stands huge and massive in the middle of what is now a roundabout in the north of the city. The church spire that is visible in the middle is located in the contiguous city of Le Chesnay. Happy Theme Day and Click here to view thumbnails for all participants !
-----------------------------

Photo taken last winter
In Versailles as in every French city, indeed every French village, there is a "monument aux morts", i.e. a memorial for all those who fell during various wars, mainly world wars I and II. It's a long list of names and dates. This is a detail of the Versailles memorial, the city dedicates it to the "Versaillais who died for their fatherland". It is erected right next to the town hall. Today is a holiday in France, commemorating V day in 1945.
