Les drapeaux tricolores et le sapin de l'hôtel de ville

Since the terror attacks of 13 November, French flags seem to have mushroomed everywhere. While they seem normal to VDP on the town hall, seeing them at the newsagents and Notre-Dame market was unusual in a country that doesn't normally fly the flag anywhere, except on public buildings and at sports events... The shot below will also serve as this year's town hall Christmas tree shot, because it hasn't changed! What has changed, however, is that this year, there is no ice-rink yet in front of the building. To see the previous photos of the town hall at Christmas, click here.

Depuis les attaques terroristes du 13 novembre, des drapeaux français ont fleuri un peu partout. S'il semble logique à VDP qu'il y en ait à l'hôtel de ville, c'est plus inhabituel dans des lieux tels que le kiosque à journaux ou même un stand du marché Notre-Dame. Ce qui change cette année, c'est qu'il n'y a pas encore de patinoire devant la mairie et ce qui ne change pas, c'est le sapin. Marianne

This pretty young lady was welcoming visitors to the town hall this last weekend for the (heightened security) 2015 edition of the history book show/salon where VDP took her Dad as they are both history buffs! She is wearing a Marianne costume, which VDP thought very appropriate considering the week we'd just had. Marianne, an allegory of Liberty and Reason, is one of the symbols of the French Republic. Below is another young lady with a pretty costume, this time a medieval one!

Cette jolie jeune Marianne accueillait les visiteurs samedi à l'édition 2015 du salon Histoire de Lire, tenue dans des conditions de sécurité drastiques à l'hôtel de ville, où VDP a emmené son Papa, comme elle féru d'histoire. VDP a félicité la jeune femme pour son choix de costume en ces temps de terrorisme, mais a oublié de lui demander comment elle s'appelait en réalité ! This show is an opportunity to meet renowned historians, some of them members of the prestigious Académie Française, engage in conversation with them, attend conferences and of course, buy signed books. Below is a book that VDP couldn't resist photographing, the 'In love with Paris dictionary' by Nicolas d'Estienne d'Orves. Paris is hurt but Paris is still loved by so many...

Les bougies à l'hôtel de ville

Seen on Saturday in front of the town hall which you have seen numerous times on this blog. Liberté, Egalité, Fraternité, the French national motto just seems even more important now after the terror attacks of 13 November... VDP was going to an event (more tomorrow) and note the security barriers that aren't usually there... This was one week and a day after. And also the day after the attack in Bamako...

C'était samedi devant l'hôtel de ville. Une semaine et un jour après. Le lendemain de Bamako. Notez les barrières de sécurité qui ne sont habituellement pas là...

Le désherbage des ouvrages

Oh gosh, VDP is a week late in showing you these pictures. Once a year, at the town hall, the city's nine public libraries hold a sale of books they no longer need, or have too many of. VDP loves how the sale is called: 'the books weeding' They go for the ridiculous price of an euro (approximately 1.10 $ per book for you Americans, or 72p per book for you Brits), which is lowered to 50 cents in the last hour, which is when VDP went. Ooooh, she would have loved to buy that C. J. Box book but eeek, not in French!

Update 1:00 AM CET after the shootings in Paris: VDP is fine as is Vreni from Vienna Daily Photo who is currently in Paris. Going to try and catch some sleep...

Ouh là, VDP a une semaine de retard avec ces photos. Tous les ans, les bibliothèques municipales "désherbent" leurs ouvrages, vendus au prix ridicule d'un euro par livre, et même 50 centimes dans la dernière heure... VDP aurait adoré acheter le bouquin de C. J. Box s'il avait été en anglais !

Wrapping up the series about the comics exhibition at the town hall, here's the man himself, Hermann, autographing and drawing for the happy few who had been selected in a draw to attend the signing. Now this included VDP, who waited patiently to have a comics book autographed for Bergson of Châteaubriant Daily Photo!

So, after yesterday's introduction, here are some of Hermann's original works that are on show at the town hall until 22 February! Above, a detail of Bois-Maury, Rodrigo, 2001. Those of you who, like VDP, know Córdoba in Andalucía will, of course have recognised the amazing arches of the Mosque-Cathedral, the Mezquita de Córdoba.

Expo BD : Hermann à Versailles

Last weekend, VDP took her Dad, who is a great amateur of historical comics, to this year's comics exhibition at the town hall. It is devoted to Hermann, one of the greatest! VDP will show you some of his works tomorrow so that you can be judges of how fantastic an artist he is!

Le weekend dernier, VDP a emmené son père, grand amateur de BD historiques, à l'expo BD 2015 à l'hôtel de ville. Elle est dévouée à Hermann, l'un des maîtres du genre ! Demain, VDP vous montrera certaines de ces œuvres.

A short film allowed to watch the artist at work, absolutely fascinating to see the ink wash painting and watercolour techniques!

Wednesday 7 January, gunmen shot dead twelve people and wounded several others, some critically so, at the Paris office of satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo in what is now with a good degree of certainty established as a militant Islamist attack. Among the dead are four of the magazine's well-known cartoonists, its editor, as well as two police officers. On Wednesday evening, while thousands took to the streets in France, there were only about forty of us freezing on Notre-Dame market place trying to keep the candles going in the wind but it was a very warm human moment...

'Charlie Hebdo is part of a venerable tradition in French journalism going back to the scandal sheets that denounced Marie-Antoinette in the run-up to the French Revolution'. Hugh Schofield, BBC News, Paris.

Mercredi soir... nous n'étions qu'une quarantaine à faire tenter de brûler les bougies dans le vent glacial mais il y avait beaucoup de chaleur humaine...

And then yesterday evening at the town hall, on a national mourning day that was also the day of another shooting just outside Paris in the aftermath of which a young policewoman died, there was an official gathering with a better turnout.

Et puis, hier soir, journée de deuil national, après une deuxième fusillade à Montrouge, il y eu plus de monde pour le rassemblement républicain à la mairie.

On the steps of the town hall...

 As everywhere else in France, the Tricolor flag is flying at half mast over all official places, in this case the préfecture building that you can read about here. Official cars were parked outside it in the evening for what was in all likelihood a crisis meeting, though there was also an ecumenical meeting. The traditional official new year's wishes ceremony was cancelled yesterday.

Comme partout en France, le drapeau tricolore est en berne sur la préfecture. Il y avait des voitures officielles garées devant le beau bâtiment hier soir sans doute pour une réunion de crise après l'annulation des vœux du préfet des Yvelines, à moins que cela n'ait été pour la réunion œcuménique.

Borne de la 2ème DB

While we're on the subject of war, this distance marker outside the Town Hall is fairly new and was inaugurated in front of the war memorial in September (while VDP was away gallivating on the other side of the big pond), during the 70th anniversary of the Liberation of France commemorations this year. Like Paris, Versailles was liberated in August 1944 by the famous 2nd Armoured Division commanded by General Philippe Leclerc de Hauteclocque. Markers like this one have been erected on their blazing trail from the Normandy region in the West of France to Alsace in the East. On the side of the marker, there is also a reference to the Kufra battle oath. On 2 March 1941, after the fall of Kufra in Libya, Leclerc and his troops swore an oath to fight until 'our beautiful flag flies over the cathedral of Strasbourg', the Alsatian city on the German border. They were faithful to it on 23 November 1944.

Puisque nous parlions hier de la Grande Guerre, avançons de quelques décennies. Cette borne installée devant le monument aux morts à côté de l'hôtel de ville a été inaugurée en septembre (pendant que VDP se promenait Outre-Atlantique), à l'occasion des commémorations du 70ème anniversaire de la libération de la France. Comme Paris, Versailles fut libérée par la célèbre 2ème Division Blindée commandée par le Général Philippe Leclerc de Hauteclocque. D'autres bornes telles que celle-ci ont été installées dans de nombreuses communes sur la voie de la 2ème DB depuis la Normandie jusqu'à l'Alsace. Sur le côté, référence est faite au serment de Koufra. Le 2 mars 1941, après la bataille de Koufra en Libye, Leclerc prête avec ses hommes le serment "jurez de ne déposer les armes que lorsque nos couleurs, nos belles couleurs, flotteront sur la cathédrale de Strasbourg." Ils tiendront ce serment en libérant Strasbourg le 23 novembre 1944.
Mise à jour le 13/11/14 : il semblerait qu'il y ait des bornes comme celle-ci aux Etats-Unis. Vous pourrez en voir une à Tallahassee, capitale de la Floride, en cliquant ici.
