Yup. A giant sequoia. It was planted in 1876 and it is to die for. The building you see behind it is Jussieu's orangerie (see yesterday's post).
Planté en 1876, ce séquoia géant est magnifique. Le bâtiment que vous voyez en arrière-plan est l'orangerie de Jussieu (v. le billet d'hier).

There are giant sequoias native to California along the coast and they can grow over 200 feet tall. In forests of sequoias their huge canopies will grow together and create entire unique ecosystems found nowhere else (I just read a book about them). They don't usually grow as single trees like this one (although it's lovely).
Absolutely massive!
One of my favorite trees.
One of my favorite trees.
Neat! So tall!
Je suppose que c'est interdit de monter sur ces branches, pourtant cela doit faire bien envie aux jeunes visiteurs.
What an incredible sight, set off perfectly with your blue skies too!
Like some legendary giant of the plant world. What a beast of beauty.
SO beautiful! I am glad it still seems to be thriving after so many years. :)
it is a gorgeous old tree!
Astounding age for a tree Ciel and it still looks so healthy.. Wonder how long it can possibly go on!
Oh wow, that is an unexpected sight. I've only seen them in Sequoia National Park in California.
magnifique cet arbre... il y en a un mais je ne connais pas son âge au parc au Loup (Chatenay-Malabry)
Unexpected and really impressive!
Il semble bien gros par rapport aux végétaux alentours mais c'est un bébé sequoia !
So beautiful. I love the big trees.

So did someone carry it from CA and plant it in Versailles? That's really interesting.
They are amazing in size and age! Sequoias and palm trees make me homesick for California.
Here's a link to a post I did a few years ago. It's Vicki in a giant sequoia forest. :-)

They are spectacular trees as they age. I would never have expected to see on there!
