Yup. A giant sequoia. It was planted in 1876 and it is to die for. The building you see behind it is Jussieu's orangerie (see yesterday's post).

There are giant sequoias native to California along the coast and they can grow over 200 feet tall. In forests of sequoias their huge canopies will grow together and create entire unique ecosystems found nowhere else (I just read a book about them). They don't usually grow as single trees like this one (although it's lovely).
