There could be several reasons for this. Santa could have gotten lost. He may have wanted to see the splendor of Versailles. He ran out of presents. The reindeer broke down. Or, he had a little too much eggnog and fell out of the sleigh to land on that balcony.
I mean, Santa may be nice and generous, but that doesn't mean he's the sharpest knife in the drawer!

Those types of Santas were really popular here a few years ago and some people still have them.
