Yesterday I showed you the French World War I tombs. There are also a great many British soldiers whose tombs stand in rows at Gonards cemetary. Here's to Captain R.E. Tanner, Lieutenants G.H. Hewitt, C. Dunlop, Lieutenant Colonel G. de W. Verner, Privates O. F. A. Ebdon and G.T Fox, randomly chosen as English, Welsh, Scots and Irish men who fought and died on French soil during the great war.

S'il y a au cimetière des Gonards les tombes de soldats français que je vous montrais hier, il y a aussi un canton de soldats britanniques. Hommage à vous, Capitaine R.E. Tanner, Lieutenants G.H. Hewitt et C. Dunlop, Lieutenant-Colonel G. de W. Verner, Privés O.F.A Ebdon et G.T. Fox, choisis au hasard pour représenter les hommes anglais, gallois, irlandais et écossais qui se battirent et moururent en France pendant la grande guerre.

A pause in the Wednesday Doorway series because today we celebrate the end of World War I. There are a great many French soldiers who were laid to rest at Gonards cemetery. The wall honours those men and reminds us of the worst battles: Somme, Marne, Verdun... Three of my great-grandfathers died between 1915 and 1917 during that butchery, on both German and French sides.

Une pause dans la série des portails du mercredi car aujourd'hui nous célébrons l'Armistice de la première guerre mondiale. Au cimetière des Gonards, il y a des cantons réservés aux soldats de la grande guerre. Le mur rappelle les tristement célèbres batailles : Marne, Somme, Verdun... Trois de mes arrière-grand-pères y laissèrent leur vie, et des deux côtés : allemand et français.

Les tombes prussiennes au cimetière Notre Dame

Inside Notre-Dame cemetary is a German plot. 545 Prussian soldiers, one nurse and 18 French soldiers were laid to rest here during the 1870 Franco-Prussian war.

Dans le cimetière Notre-Dame se trouve un emplacement où ont été enterrés 545 soldats prussiens, une infirmière et 18 soldats français tombés à Versailles ou dans les environs pendant la guerre de 1870.

Le monument aux morts

In Versailles as in every French city, indeed every French village, there is a "monument aux morts", i.e. a memorial for all those who fell during various wars, mainly world wars I and II. It's a long list of names and dates. This is a detail of the Versailles memorial, the city dedicates it to the "Versaillais who died for their fatherland". It is erected right next to the town hall. Today is a holiday in France, commemorating V day in 1945.
