L'hôtel de la guerre I

Hôtel de la guerre Versailles
In all these years, VDP has never yet shown you one of the most beautiful doorways of the city. This is the recently restored door of Louis XVth's 'hôtel de la guerre' or war ministry. It was built between 1759 and 1760 to plans by Jean-Baptiste Berthier. It stands beside another part of the grand building with another gorgeous door which VDP had shown you here and was built on land that used to be Louis XIIIth's kitchen garden. It was later used as military school.

Fancy door for a military school.

From what you've told me and I've read online, we should prepare for la guerre when we get to the palace. The official website, though, says the crowds drop a lot after the first of September.

That is a fine looking doorway, but it must be on the right building. It would just look silly on my house. Thank you for the post and history lesson.

It is just stupefying that after all this time, there are still gorgeous places in Versailles that you have not yet been able to show us!

This Louis was not known for his subtlety. What a magnificent doorway.
