Saying hello the French way ("la bise", kiss of friendship) outside a café on place Saint-Louis on Saturday. Outside temperature 37° (just short of 100°F). No A/C... This is actually a reflection in a mirror inside the café.Café place Saint-Louis. Température extérieure 37°. Ceci est en fait un reflet dans le miroir du café.

La bise is problematic for Americans. It's not at all part of the culture. However, it's not unusual on the upper end of the economic spectrum. Those are the people who have spent some time in Europe. It can be quite awkward if you are in the border between middle class and privileged.
True friendship doesn't care about the temperature :-)
