Walking into the courtyard of the former war ministry... You can just about see the shadow of the monumental doorway VDP showed you yesterday. The bust of Lazare Carnot was added in 1834 to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of the arrival inside the building of the military school of artillery and engineering...
Entrons dans la cour de l'hôtel de la guerre... Vous pouvez distinguer l'ombre du portail monumental que VDP vous montrait hier. Le buste de Lazare Carnot a été installé en 1834 pour célébrer le cinquantième anniversaire de l'installation de l'école militaire de l'artillerie et du génie... It is interesting to note that this old photo was taken rue Gambetta. Since 1916, the street has been renamed to become avenue of the American Independence, VDP doesn't know when this happened but the reason why is explained here!
Il est intéressant de noter que cette photo a été prise rue Gambetta. Depuis 1916, la rue est devenue l'avenue de l'indépendance américaine mais VDP n'a pas su trouver quand...

The architecture is breathtaking!
It's a beautiful building. I enjoyed the history lesson...I used to teach about the Treaty of Versailles, but this post makes it come to life.
Is the building still connected with the military?
Re your comment on L & L Photography: That place is out in the country...It's a business of some kind, but there are no signs or anything else to indicate what it is. I just thought it was an interesting photo.

Oh I love the first image Ciel, you captured so well the immense feel of the arch, even before I read the words I knew what this huge 'shadow' was, and of course it's always so fascinating to see the old photos.

This is a war ministry, but the building has the softest, most feminine pink walls. Not what I would expect.
