This is a favourite painting of mine. Madame Elisabeth, king Louis XVIth's sister, painted by Elisabeth Vigée-Lebrun. It is currently on show in the orangerie of her domain in Montreuil neighbourhood. I have shown you the domain countless times in all seasons, to view the posts it's this way. To read about this highly intelligent and accomplished woman who was guillotined in 1794, it's this way.

beau portrait, j'avoue que je connaissais pas trop son histoire avant ton post
She is beautiful. And, you know what, she reminds me of someone. Who could that be? Ah, let's see...I've got it! Look at the portrait, then let your eyes move to the right to the image of Cieldequimper...you see clearly the resemblance, oui ?
Amazing. No wonder this is a favorite painting of yours. Perhaps you are related to Madame Elisabeth?
I love Lowell's comment!:) I remember some of those photos of her domain - so lovely. What a tragic end to someone who could have done much more.
Yep, I think Lowell is right, too!! Her death was tragic! Great post for the day, Ciel. Thanks for the link!
I can only imagine that they took her head because she was smarter than many of the men of her time.
That Lowell, he doesn't miss a trick.
Wonderful painting. Doesn't go with my furnishing though.
I love these portraits, after all the painters were the "photographers" of their day. I love the story of how Henry V111 got Hogarth to go places and paint the women he fancied so he could see what they were like.
Thanks for the information and links, this is so interesting, I'm going to check it.The painting is magnificent!
Happy Weekend,
Léia
*** rainy day here :(
Beautiful portrait.
I can see why you like this painting. The circumstances of her death are very sad. I have to agree with Lowell, I think he's on to something.
Not related, heh? Darn. I was planning to tell everyone I knew a French princess! I may do that anyway. :)
A beautiful portrait made by another very accomplished woman.
Wonderful painting.
Madam Elizabeth was a stylish and clever woman Ciel, I can see why you admire her.
