Cimetière Saint-Louis

On the day I went to various Molière month venues only to realise that the plays had been cancelled, I ended up taking a walk in Saint-Louis cemetery which is located next to the Bishop's see. It was founded in 1770, making it one of the oldest in France. Painters Georges Rouault and Henri Le Sidaner were laid to rest here. The monument in the middle was erected in memory of those who died in Versailles ambulances and hospitals during the 1870 Franco-Prussian war. There is a stark photo on Artsy Versailles.

One of your nicest photos, Ciel! The light is sumptuous and I love all the vertical lines and the blue sky and the clouds and the flag and the street sign, and...well, all of it!

This seems to be a tightly packed urban cemetery. No room to spread out, so pack them in tight and erect vertical monuments. Pretty interesting.

What a marvelous capture of a beautiful place, Ciel! It reminds me of one of the oldest the cemeteries in New Orleans!

We all got the benefit of your loss, this beautiful photo! Cemeteries can be beautiful. How cool that Henri Le Sidoner is buried here. Now I want to find out more about him (only know of him from Proust...and now this :).

Les cimetières sont toujours des endroits a la fois calmes et passionnants. Cette guerre de 1870, je me penche dessus depuis qq temps, jamais etudiée à l'ecole, et je veux comprendre..

A lovely, well composed photo. I love old cemeteries and their wonderful monuments. Monuments and headstones are no longer allowed in many cemeteries here. They've been replaced with small, flat plaques that sit in the ground.

I like the angle you shot from to make this photo. I also like the contrast of the soft blue sky and the hard tan-colored monuments and buildings... and the manicured green shrubs. Very nice.

Lovely image Ciel, it just blows me away when you mention how old things are.. 1770, that is astounding for such a young country as Oz.

You could've linked this to Taphophile Tragics... :-) What strikes me about this cemetery shot is how close those residential places are! You'd never see that in China... all those spirits... yikes! It does look like an interesting place to wander around... so much history.
