One year has gone by since the first post on VDP and what a year it has been! Thank you all for following and commenting, I do appreciate it so very much! I wonder: who could play VDP a birthday serenade on this mandolin which I saw in an antiques shop in Saint Louis neighbourhood? I'm so sorry for not being able to visit all your blogs as usual, I'll get back to my normal rythm asap!Versailles - Royal city - Ville royale - Un blog de photos quotidiennes depuis 2009 - A daily photo blog since 2009

A chandelier reflected in the mirrors of the mirrors lounge inside the Grand Trianon castle. It was Louis the 14th's council room, the mirrors and wood panelling are original (1687-89, altered in 1706). To see more Weekend Reflections, visit Newtown Area Photo! Have a great weekend!
Continuing the Plains theme after Tuesday's buffalo: both BSquared and Jacob have posted similar statues. Ha, Versailles has got one too, standing outside a restaurant that makes beef a speciality and is part of a France wide chain.-----------------------------------

Here are yesterday's two polar bears in the courtyard of the hôtel du Bailliage. No, it isn't a hotel, nor was it ever. It now houses antiques shops, but was built in 1724 and used to house the court and prison before the French Revolution. It later became the assizes court until 1839. I think it's a gorgeous building!Thursday, 21 January 2010

Froid, ce début 2010 !
2010 starts out coldly but it doesn't deter the tourists at the palace. These are lucky, it was sunny on Sunday, the first sunny day in a long, long time but you certainly still need your head covered and your gloves. Isn't this just an international, intercontinental pose? Don't we all look immediately wondering if we've got it right?
-----------------------------

On Saturday, I walked past one of my favourite pâtisseries. To my great enjoyment, I saw that the façade had been transformed for the season!Sunday, 17 January 2010
X. Veilhan au château
I have shown you a couple of photos of Xavier Veilhan's now closed exhibition in the palace grounds, you can see them by clicking on the "exhibition" label below. Here is another one, representing architects Philippe Bona and Elisabeth Lemercier, photo taken in November 2009.-------------------------------------

CDP Blog Day: best photo of 2009
Oh what a hard choice it was. But I finally decided on this seasonal photo of the statue as a sentinel taken in February 2009. There is a runner up of course, the costume of a person going to Versailles ball on May 31, 2009. Will you help me to decide?Click here to view thumbnails for all participants

Wednesday Doorway: la Cour d'assises
Wow! This week I am back to normal and actually posting my doorway on Wednesday instead of Tuesday! This is the entrance of the assize court, where popular juries hear and judge crime cases. Anyone interested in French penal procedure and the definition of crimes can read more about "les assises" here. Those wondering who the person in black is: a barrister or attorney, depending on which side of the Atlantic you are! This is where Jessica Davies was sentenced yesterday to 15 years imprisonment for murder.Tuesday, 12 January 2010
Les soldes d'hiver

The big winter clearout sale has begun last week. How about a stylish armchair with a very versaillais cushion? Ah, maybe 20% off isn't enough yet... You might walk a little further in Saint-Louis neighbourhood and stop at "the three bears house", a wonderful toy shop!

Two more pictures of my walk around Saint-Louis neighbourhood on Saturday. Above, houses of the well square and left, a fruit & veg shop rue Royale, houses of the oats square. The roofs of these houses are typically versaillais, as they were invented by Jules Hardouin-Mansart who gave them their French name: "mansardes".Sunday, 10 January 2010
Le carré au puits
Saint Louis neighbourhood yesterday afternoon. These little houses, part of four squares, were built in 1737 as the new city was expanding and were initially meant to be markets. The four squares have wonderfully evocative names: well square, oats square, soil square and fountain square. This is the well square.Saturday, 9 January 2010

Avenue de Paris, yesterday afternoon, the convent of the serving sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. I'm not sure the translation is right, but it's literal enough! When I came home from the dentist's at around 9:00 pm, the temperature had dropped to about 20°F/-6°C.Thursday, 7 January 2010
Quimper en blanc, le 2 janvier
Hello everyone! I'm back from a very frosty Quimper! I hope you all had a great start to the New Year (in my case, a very bad toothache!) Thank you for all your comments, I hope to be catching up with your blogs in the coming days!Wednesday, 6 January 2010
Le lycée Hoche
Hoche high school is undergoing... messy work. It is ranked among the top 10 high schools in France. The building, which was designed by Richard Mique and completed in 1772, was once a nunnery founded by Queen Marie Leszczyńska. It became a school after the French Revolution and was named after General Hoche. Read more about it here.

The mills I showed you here run a shop of their produce. Unfortunately, their opening times are such that for the time being, I can't go there and show you the inside.

I'm not showing you a photograph today. A couple of months ago, I was telling you that the Grand Trianon had been built for king Louis the 14th where a porcelain palace had stood before. This is it... It was built between 1670 and 1672 by architect Louis Le Vau for Madame de Montespan, mistress of the sun king with porcelain coming from Rouen, Lisieux, Nevers and Saint-Cloud. I believe Sharon of Photographing an Island wanted to see this, so here it is!Sunday, 3 January 2010
