Saint Louis neighbourhood yesterday afternoon. These little houses, part of four squares, were built in 1737 as the new city was expanding and were initially meant to be markets. The four squares have wonderfully evocative names: well square, oats square, soil square and fountain square. This is the well square.All the parks as well as the palace grounds are closed just in case someone breaks a leg, which makes for one very unhappy and irritated blogger!

Le quartier Saint Louis hier après-midi. Ces petites maisons mansardées, composent quatre carrés construits en 1737 lors de l'expansion de la ville nouvellement créée, et devaient initialement abriter un marché. Les quatre places portent des noms délicieusement évocateurs : carré au puits, carré à l'avoine, carré à la terre et carré à la fontaine. Ceci est le carré au puits.
Tous les parcs et le domaine royal sont fermés "en raison des intempéries" ce qui fait de moi une blogueuse irritée voire courroucée !

ReplyDeleteHouses built in 1737, heh? Sheesh! And they're still standing. We have some built in 1937 that are still standing. I thought that was a big deal.
Why are there all those abandoned bikes?

aso people are still out riding bicycles in the snow? That sounds way more dangerous than walking in it.

Your snow pictures are amazing, the closing of the parks seems an eerily familiar no-trouble policy like the one leading to the closure of our New Fortress.

Here is also snowing since yesterday.We needed to change our plans for this weekend.First we were thinking to go to Paris ( yesss!!!!) but Cezar was afraid about the snow and I heard something about the tyres, and lots of snow...and so on...Then kids wanted to go to Amsterdam. But a friend wrote saying "do not go there this weekend because the snow"...So, we decided to go home!
But I'm happy enjoying blog friends!

I'd love to see all four squares. Is your toothache adding to your disgruntlement over being locked out of the park? May the weather soon turn mild, your snow become a pleasant memory, and the park gates fall open.
ReplyDeleteTo those wondering about the closed parks: VP hit the nail. It's the new no-trouble policy. If the parks are closed, no one will break a leg or receive a branch on the head.

@ all: thanks for your concern about my tooth. Actually, it's still painful at times even though I am swallowing a inordinate amount of antibiotics, which can't be changed. Next appointment Tue. evening after work!
@ Dina: what I really wanted was to take some photos of the palace grounds! No jumping over fences there!
@ Chuck: yes they do, though there was never really a market as such here. It immediately became a residential area with shops.
