A lot of shops are closing down in Saint-Louis neighbourhood, more's the pity as they are independent shops. One of my favourites, which I showed you here and here, has already closed. Now 'Jeux de Perles', or 'Pearl games' is about to close. Check out Stéphanie's wonderful stuff until June 25. Her lovely blog can be seen here.
Same over here. There are many streets with more than a handful of shops already closed.
ReplyDeleteA moving mean to measure time and life indeed. Please have a good Thursday.

Thanks for that link... and yes, sad all over.
ReplyDeleteIt is not any solace to the shopkeepers to know that it is happening everywhere. I hope that most small independent shopkeepers can hang on until the economic upturn takes hold.
ReplyDeleteI agree that it is especially sad when the independents close...they just don't have the financial resources to compete with the larger companies, esp. when the going gets tough.
ReplyDeleteI can imagine that you and lots of other women will miss these particular shops!
What a shame. I was just getting fond of that neighbourhood. It always breaks my heart when small businesses have to close due to financial pressure caused by lower prices in big businesses.

I agree with Jack and hope that these artisans can hold on. I would love this boutique... do I see a Lego necklace?

So unfortunate that so many small businesses are closing everywhere.
ReplyDeleteAh, this is a universal sorrow, isn't it? You've touched such a tender nerve here. We all wish the best to these independent shop owners who have given so much time and energy, hope and cash to make their businesses work. May they land on their feet, wherever they go next. And very soon may something equally wonderful come into the void they leave.
ReplyDeleteHave the shops been there very long? Despite the sluggish economy here, new stores and restaurants continue to open almost every day. Here's hoping that new shops move into Saint Louis soon.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE that Lego necklace. How sad such unique local shops are shutting down =(
ReplyDeleteWhy are they closing? Bigger, more modern stores elsewhere?
ReplyDeleteI hate when this happens. It looks like a great shop. I always try to support the independent merchants here.
ReplyDeleteSame here too - seems like everywhere :(
ReplyDeleteSeems to be a worldwide situation. Bigger is not better-- except in ability to have cheaper prices. Thank you for your lovely photos.
ReplyDeleteIt is the same here. People buy many things via internet.
ReplyDeleteAnd the people who rent small shops, very often have to pay a very high rent for a shop they don`t can manage to buy, plus tax VAT etc. takes much too.
Very nice and creative shops! I hope they will manage to go in to sale via the internet, or find a new and smaller place to run their shop from.
Thanks for the link!
Pas toujours facile le commerce...
ReplyDeleteUne belle serie de photos dans ce magasin de perles.
Dans tes derniers posts, les photos que j'aime plus particulierement: la 2eme du 17 mai et la photo du 18.

It's really a pity. It's not easy to keep doing business these days.
ReplyDelete*** In Brasil, Marina used to buy some pearls, different colors and sizes and make her own fantasy bijoux, she is very creative!
It was also so funny.

Dommage et tragique quand on pense à tout le travail investi et les dettes qui restent souvent pour un bon moment...
ReplyDeleteWhat a pitty ! J'imagine un départ à la retraite et pas de repreneur car le commerce demande la passion lorsque ce n'est pas vente de montres etc ou franchise.
ReplyDeleteIl en est de même pour des exploitations agricoles (comme des rosiéristes)...
That is so sad. It's happening here too. Everything is going to be what we call "the big box" stores. Nothing unique or individual. :(
ReplyDeleteThis is truly sad. The same is happening everywhere around here. There's a shopping mall (I hate them all) in my neighbourhood and one of these days I counted 32 shops with closed doors. Even in a shopping mall this is heartbreaking, although I know these have previously ruined many small street shops.
ReplyDeleteOh no. That looks like such a wonderful shop.
ReplyDeleteI was planning a window shot, but I postponed it to Monday... I am sorry smaller and independent shop are closing, it happens almost everywhere!
ReplyDeleteI'm also sad to see shops like this close...it's so unique and I love them but I guess it's very hard to keep them going.
