VDP had another contender for yesterday's Theme Day. This is one of the bas-reliefs at the Belvedere at Petit Trianon and represents an old Saturn warming himself by the fire. The bas-reliefs of Richard Mique's little octagonal marvel represent the four seasons. Below are Flora, with a crown of roses; Ceres with a crown of ears of wheat and Dyonisus with a crown of vine stock. Finally, an unknown but modern deity, no doubt...
Beautiful work! It looks like Ceres is waiting for someone.
ReplyDeleteExquisite detail
ReplyDeleteLove the one of Saturn, such a great face but then I like the others in dappled sunlight...decisions, decisions..
ReplyDeleteThese are amazing. Love that last photo!
ReplyDeleteFlora is so pretty, Ciel!
ReplyDeleteI wonder how engaged the nobility were with the art that surrounded them. The people depicted didn't lack for calories.
ReplyDeleteI might be partial to Flora and Ceres, but that is just me.
ReplyDeleteThey are exquisite ! And nicely captured.
ReplyDeleteI like the light on the bottom two photos as I can see the bas relief quite well!
ReplyDeleteAmazingly detailed, well spotted and photographed.
ReplyDeleteThese are simply beautiful. I love them all.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful ART and what fantastic light you got too.
ReplyDeleteThese would have worked too.
ReplyDeleteThey really are so special Ciel, long may they remain so perfect.
ReplyDeleteYou know that I am a fan of these allegorical reliefs: thank you for the great reportage!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful indeed!
ReplyDeleteI do like Flora with the crown of roses.

ReplyDeleteGreat series, I like every shot but the muscles of the old man's arm on top caught my attention. Fantastic!
ReplyDeleteExquisite details.
ReplyDeleteexquisite detail and beauty.
ReplyDeletei love the light you captured these in!
bien conservé
ReplyDeleteI echo the comment by Jose: the muscles in the upper arm of the old man in the first relief, are striking. It would take much subtle effort, and chipping away, to carve these portraits on what I guess to be relatively thin medium. I say medium, as I am not such if they are granite, or marble or something altogether different.
ReplyDeleteIMO, the light must have been a great challenge, being dappled and all ...
Fantastic! I wonder how old they all are.
