L'allée des Mortemets

allee des Mortemets Versailles château
Today is 'la grande déambulation' or 'the big stroll'. The normally busy road from neighbouring Saint-Cyr l'Ecole town to Versailles will be closed to cars and activities such as a parade and brass band music are to be held. Unfortunately, VDP still can't walk properly so won't be able to go... The event, however, gives VDP the opportunity to show you Mortemets alley, which runs almost parallel to the busy road. It was renovated last year as part of Le Nôtre year celebrations. It was originally planned by André Le Nôtre (Louis XIV's genius gardener), between 1670 and 1680 and links the Swiss Lake almost to St-Cyr l'Ecole, crossing still active Mortemets military camp along the way... It is seen here from St-Cyr side, from opposite this place.

  1. Whoa! That's one long, straight and narrow road.

  2. This is the restored alley, not the road. It isn't meant for cars (as you can see from the sign!)

  6. So I'm inferring that bike riding won't work for you either. That's too bad. Anyway, that alley looks very inviting and I'm sure it will wait for you... it's already been patient for over 300 years.
