On Saturday, in better late than never mode and in this, the tercentenary year of Louis XIV's death, VDP visited the 'Louis de Versailles' exhibition at the main public library, located in Louis XV's former war, marine and foreign affairs ministry. This lovely little bust of a young Louis XIV is attributed to Jacques Sarazin (1592-1660). The gorgeous book below is an 1691 the state of the king's navy in 1661. There's a lovely Molière play costume made in 1990 by Patrick Cauchetier and finally, the king's signature on a manuscript... Just a few samples of the free exhibition that can be seen until 9 January (and a bit more to come tomorrow).
I wonder how long he had to pose for the painter.
ReplyDeleteMost interesting set of historical objects. The clothes and the book are great. Of course the carved statue is also a major work.

ReplyDeleteImagine the knowledge contained in those books. They are still very vibrant.
ReplyDeleteThe colour plate in the open book looks so vibrant! Louis XIV had quite a curly head of hair!
ReplyDeleteLots of interesting stuff here but that bust makes him look like an effeminate little boy!
ReplyDeleteSounds like a very interesting exhibition. I like the puffy cheeks on that bust.
ReplyDeleteWould love to see this exhibition!
ReplyDeleteI am sure that it's a very interesting exhibition.
ReplyDeleteHard to disagree with what Lowell is saying!
