Ah ça ira, ça ira, ça ira...

Louis XVI and Marie-Antoinette in the palace gardens in 1775. A strange image for Bastille Day indeed, yet the monarchy before the French Revolution is part of our history and contributed to making us who we are today... Print by Hubert Robert. The title of this blog post is the chorus of the best known revolutionary song.

  1. Happy Bastille Day! It's a lovely print and a great point re: the monarchy. The French Revolution has great resonance here. In NYC, there are such marvelous Bastille Day celebrations, I think of it as almost being a NYC holiday too. :)

  6. This somehow does seem like a very appropriate Versailles interpretation of Bastille Day. Enjoy your national day.

  14. Not the typical Bastille Day theme but I definitely see the connection.

French history is very interesting. It amazes me how many different cultures and languages have been absorbed into modern France.

    Vive la France!

  18. It's interesting how history shapes our lives. isn't it? This year Canada is celebrating the War of 1812 because after that war, British citizens on this side of the border decided they wanted to remain part of the British Empire and not part of the United States. Fascinating/
